The EARN IT Act Is Back To Threaten Our Privacy

The bipartisan, misguided-at-best EARN IT Act was reintroduced to both chambers of our federal government – the unpopular 2020 bill finding new life at the end of January. This action requires immediate national alert. The bill, a poorly-researched attempt to cut down on child sexual abuse online, would result in a massive uptick of government surveillance that cannot be tolerated.

The Eliminating Abusive and Rampant Neglect of Interactive Technologies Act of 2022, or EARN IT Act 2022, would create a new 19 member federal commission able to assign any rules or guidelines they want to regulate the internet. Any website that does not comply could face repercussions. This could mean many concerning things, though, experts seem most worried about the complete end of encryption as we know it and the routine scanning of your DMs.

We’ve linked an article from the Electronic Frontier Foundation, an organization that can break this issue down far better than we can. Go check that out here.

It’s of the utmost importance that you tell your Senators and Representatives to vote “NO” on this bill. Your right to privacy mustn’t be further sacrificed. A government for the people, and by the people, doesn’t spy on the people. Act quickly, time is running out.
